This worldwide charter was adopted in June 2006 at the World Congress of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) in Barcelona and was co-signed by the Austrian Society for Eating Disorders (ÖGES) and the Eating Disorders Network (Innsbruck).
This charter encompasses the rights and legitimate expectations of people with eating disorders and shows that there are common principles around the world that unite those with eating disorders, their loved ones and their carers. It was presented to the public for the first time in German at the Eating Disorders 2006 / Eating Disorders 2006, 14th International Scientific Conference / The 14th International Conference on Eating Disorders on October 20, 2006 in Alpbach (Austria).
The Austrian Society for Eating Disorders (ÖGES) and the Eating Disorders Network are the national contact points of the Charter for Austria; they have also set up the option of online support for German-speaking countries. The Charter marks the beginning of a concerted effort to call on governments, public health services and all those who advocate and support the eating disorder and their loved ones to implement the stated standards of quality of care, education and prevention.
